Sylvia's Details

This temple of soul food has drawn locals and tourists alike for decades, and Sylvia herself still presides over this gem of Central Harlem. Owned by the Woods family which consists of Herbert and Sylvia Woods, their four children - Van, Bedelia, Kenneth, Crizette and a third generation of grandchildren, the entire family and a great group of employees have worked together to make Sylvia's a world famous African-American owned business. Sylvia's Restaurant of Harlem was established in 1962 with a seating capacity of 35 people. Today, Sylvia's occupies most of a city block with a seating capacity of 450 people.

Enjoy the terrific and hearty meat dishes (we are partial to ribs) with terrific sides, whether mac & cheese, okra or black-eyed peas. If you possibly have any room left for dessert, they definitely will fill you up. While some old-timers bemoan the higher prices as well as carnival-like atmosphere blamed on large groups and tourists, Sylvia's still remains much of its charm and is absolutely worth a visit. Loved that sauce and the spice, or can't make it to Harlem? Sylvia's sells her products online!
